In the midst of the summer heat, we’re preparing for a 2400-degree day--that’s the temperature to which we fire the wood kiln. My friend and former colleague Todd Pletcher will be taking charge of this summer firing, which will contain about 400 pieces. I’ll be firing an assortment of mugs, bowls, vases, and large jars.
Some of those pieces might show up on Etsy. While the studio website only features our glazed line, I’ve put some of my best one-of-a-kind woodfired work on Etsy. You can view and purchase these pieces online at www.etsy.com/shop/markgoertzen.
Part of what I love about wood firing are the drips and runs formed by the ash on the pots. In the studio, we’ve been playing with glazes that replicate this effect. Our latest experiment produces a pale earthy green with darker green runs. We’re pretty happy with it; come on by and see it for yourself!
